Maj StormoGipson interview by a reporter for Colorado Public radio at the interfaith service that opened the convention on Sunday, August 24, 2008:
When asked why she supports Barach Obama, Maj StormoGipson points to his experience as a neighborhood organizer in Chicago's southside. Virtually no other national politician has this experience of on-the-street engagement with real people solving problems. Rather than take polls to find out what America’s working poor think, Barack Obama has worked directly with them.
StormoGibson was born in India to Baptist missionaries whose professional life was one of service to the less advantaged. She was fortunate to be raised by progressive Democratic parents in the wonderful country of India. Maj and her husband, Justin, are both physicians who served two years as medical missionaries in Nicaragua during the mid-1980's.
StormoGibson also feels connected to Barack Obama because he is the first presidential candidate in decades who has truly had a world-focused background and experiences. "He understands how the US is viewed from abroad and can see the amazing opportunities that lay ahead for America and the world," StormoGibson said.
The StormoGibsons have been active in building the Democratic Party in Kootenai County for several years. After eight years of no Democratic legislators from the area, the StormoGibsons were instrumental in helping to elect the first of what will be many more Democrats to the legislature: Rep. George Saylor.
StormoGibson is an outspoken advocate for improving the quality of life for all Americans by investing in education and health care. And she is eager to help more people understand that it is the Democrats who prioritize fair taxes for all people. Equally important is the priority of Obama to promote an effective foreign policy. A foreign policy that uses serious negotiation and financing infrastructure in foreign countries to promote US interests and international stability, as opposed to using unilateral military force.
StormoGibson came to the state convention in June fired up and ready to go. She was humbled by the incredible array of people who stepped forward to run for the national delegate positions. She is truly "honored and thrilled" to have been elected and to represent Idaho Democrats in Denver.
StormoGibson feels the responsibility she has been entrusted with to cast a vote in favor of the first organizer with deep roots in America’s many different cultures, to be our next President, is an honor she will treasure for the rest of her life.
