~ For Friday, December 4:
Books into Blockbuster Movies
This week's Democratic Club will feature Larry Telles. He will focus on books made into movies. That is, "Books into Blockbuster Movies".
Larry’s first book, A Brief History of the Silent Screen and the World at that Time, is built around the film world. How did silent film affect the film world and how did the world affect silent film.. Larry has also produced a Helen Gibson companion DVD for this book. The DVD contains six of Helen Gibson’s surviving silent films. It is a look into the role that one woman played in the history of film. His talk today takes us from the world of books that were made into movies. This will cover the first Academy award winner to the 2015 winner.
The meeting will take place at the Iron Horse Bar and Grill, at 407 E Sherman Ave in Coeur d'Alene at 12:00 PM. Club meetings take place each Friday.
LARRY TELLES and his wife Margaret moved her nearly 17 years ago from the Bay Area. He retired from Pacific Telephone Company in 1987 when he began working in Silicon Valley. His last job was a technical instructor at ITT Tech in Santa Clara, California and Spokane in 2001. He became interested in silent films at age fifteen in 1952. Television in those early days used silent films to fill part of the evening hours before leaving the air at 9 p.m. His grandmother saw his interest in silent movies, and gave him Blum’s book, A Pictorial History of the Silent Screen. Larry was hooked from that day on. Since those many years ago he has branched out by collecting all types of memorabilia from cliffhanger serials to “B” Westerns. He likes how film has evolved.
Larry is one of the founding members of the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum in Niles, California. His position on the board is webmaster and film historian. He participates in the museum’s Broncho Billy Silent Film Festival every June. This is one of the many film festivals across the U.S. that continues to bring attention to the silent film era for those who are not aware of its existence. Silent film is an art form that gave up too soon.
