The Democratic Club will feature a discussion on the International Baccalaureate curriculum. A panel of local teachers have agreed to participate including Andrea Covington, Tim Sanford, and Eric Edmunds. All have some experience with the IB program.
Here's some background about the IB curriculum and its relevance locally. The IB's curriculum is targeted at students aged 3 to 19. Its purpose is to help develop intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. Since it was founded more than 40 years ago, the IB has educated nearly 1 million students in nearly 140 countries.
Right wing critics believe the IB promotes a liberal or socialist agenda influenced by the United Nations and as a result of their efforts to displace moderate republicans and democrats on the school board, they have succeeded in eliminating the International Baccalaureate curriculum for students in the Coeur 'd Alene School District 271.
Many teachers and parents, and supporters of educational diversity believe that the rigid ideology that led to this decision is wrong for our students and our community.
The meeting will take place at the Iron Horse Bar and Grill, Coeur d' Alene, Idaho 83814 at 12:00 PM (noon) on Friday, August 23, 2012.
