A native of north Idaho, Kathy Kahn was born 60 years ago in Coeur d’Alene, the second child of Dean and Loretta Kraack. She spent her early years in southern Kootenai county and atttended Rose Lake Elementary and Kootenai Junior-Senior High School until moving closer to Coeur d’Alene and attending Coeur d’Alene High School. She then attended Post Falls High School from which she graduated in 1973.
In 1977 she met in Moscow and married Raph Kahn, a recent graduate of the University of Idaho, who went on to become a Naval flight officer. While Ralph was stationed at various naval installations she pursued her higher education, attending colleges such as Northwest Nazarene, the University of Maryland, College of Central Texas, and the University of West Florida, from which she graduated in 1989 with a degree in English Education. She has pursued post-graduate courses at the University of Idaho and the Western Governor’s University.
She began teaching English at St. Maries High School in 1989 and is planning on some part-time teaching after retiring in May of 2016. She currently is chairman of the English Department at the high school and she also teaches a dual credit English class through North Idaho College. She has been honored as the teacher of the year at St. Maries on four separate occasions.
She and Ralph have two children, Nathan, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a Naval Airman, and Amanda, currently a student at Lewis Clark State College.
